According to one transfer insider, Liverpool have no plans to sell Cody Gakpo this month and would have no intention of changing that stance unless two things were to happen.
Tottenham Hotspur have been continually linked with a move for the Dutch forward this summer, although the Daily Mail’s Simon Jones recently claimed that Anfield chiefs are adamant they don’t want to sell the 27-year-old.
That standpoint has been corroborated by another journalist in Pete O’Rourke, who hinted that the only things which could change the Reds’ mind is if they were to bring in another one or two forwards in this window and if Spurs submit an enormous bid for our number 18.
Liverpool ‘do not plan’ to sell Gakpo at present
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast for Football Insider, he said: “As things stand right now, Liverpool do not plan on selling Cody Gakpo despite Tottenham’s interest.
“A lot will depend on what Liverpool do on the incomings during the rest of the transfer window if more signings are to arrive, because [Andoni] Iraola does not want to weaken his squad.
“If the likes of [Bradley] Barcola and [Ibrahim] Mbaye – and potentially others – arrive at Anfield, then that could open the door for Cody Gakpo to leave Liverpool.
“The only way he could possibly move would be if Spurs were to make a huge offer of £70m+ at least, and if Liverpool brought in more players. As I said, as things stand right now, with the squad a bit short, they can’t really afford to let Gakpo go.”

Liverpool might find it hard to turn down £70m+ for Gakpo
O’Rourke is correct in saying that, despite the Dutchman being one of three left-sided wingers in Iraola’s squad, a lack of depth elsewhere in attack means that Liverpool aren’t massively well-stocked across the forward line as a whole.
That could change if Barcola and/or Mbaye were to join from Paris Saint-Germain in the next three weeks, but even then the Reds would be highly unlikely to budge unless Spurs were to present a truly irresistible offer for Gakpo.
If LFC were to reinforce their attacking options and the north Londoners come to the table with £70m for the Dutchman, that could shift the needle towards a deal being potentially done.
Liverpool signed him for £44m (Daily Mail) midway through the 2022/23 season when he was 23 years old. If they could yield a profit of more than 50% on him at 27, pragmatically it’d make a lot of sense for FSG to take the money in that instance.
Gakpo has a decent if not earth-shattering return of 50 goals in 180 games for the Reds, although he endured a poor 2025/26 campaign in which he netted just nine times and was the subject of fierce criticism from pundits and some LFC fans on social media.
An offer of £70m or more from Spurs would certainly give the Anfield hierarchy food for thought, but for nowit’d be in the Merseysiders’ best interests to hold onto a player who showed during the title-winning season just how reliable a goalscoring source he can be when he’s at his sharpest.
Unless the unthinkable happens now, Liverpool will sign Barcola for a British record transfer fee, and Gakpo will then definitely be sold to spurs for around 70 million.
Barcola is now pushing for the transfer, not wanting to play in the super cup tomorrow.
What happens after that is anyone’s guess, unless there’s a big bid for Alexis mac allister I don’t see us trying to get a midfielder. If he does go Alex Scott of Bournemouth will be a target.
Jones, Elliott and Chiesa will all leave I expect a very busy final day of the transfer window right up until 1st of September at 11 PM.
If Alexis mac allister doesn’t move on he’s going to end up on the Bench. He won’t be happy with that.
We will have four wingers, but unless there’s a few more coming in at right back and in midfield and up front we won’t be challenging for anything.
We have individual talent but not enough quality in key positions , we don’t defend properly and without squad depth a few injuries the title is over before Christmas.
All the reasons why we failed last season and got slot the sacked are still there.
