Ronald Araujo is set to complete a season-long loan move to Liverpool imminently, and while some reservations about the Barcelona defender have been raised on social media, it’s a deal which makes perfect sense for the Reds.
The 27-year-old’s impending arrival will go a long way towards addressing major concerns about defensive depth in Andoni Iraola’s squad, with the Uruguayan giving the Basque coach another centre-back option whilst also being able to cover at right-back if needed.
He’s set to travel to Merseyside today to undergo a medical ahead of the loan move to LFC, and the transaction should then be formalised in the coming days.
Araujo on loan would be a ‘low-risk move’ for Liverpool
In a comprehensive article for The Athletic analysing the deal, Andy Jones explained why there’s a lot more to gain than to lose for Liverpool from signing Araujo, even if the ‘overriding feeling’ among the fan base is ‘relief’ at bringing in another defender rather than jubilation.
The journalist wrote: ‘Alongside versatility and leadership, Araujo has several attributes – he is aerially dominant at 6ft 3in (191cm) and a front-foot type also comfortable defending in the channels – that suit Iraola’s style of football and should translate to the Premier League game.
‘The structure of the deal makes this feel like a relatively low-risk move that could have a big payoff, and that is something to be enthusiastic about.’

Araujo should be a good fit for Iraola’s Liverpool
Araujo’s performance metrics from the 2025/26 LaLiga season (via Fotmob) support Jones’ point about the Uruguayan’s aerial prowess and ‘front-foot’ defending.
The latter quality should make him a good fit for the high-intensity style of play that we can expect from Iraola’s Reds side, and his dominance in duels might also make the team less susceptible to conceding preventable set-piece goals, which was a recurring theme in the previous campaign.

There has been criticism of the 27-year-old in Spain over defensive errors, and he does have a frustrating tendency to pick up several (albeit minor) injuries over the course of a season, but Liverpool are still getting an experienced high-level operator to help cover off a problematic position in the squad.
Also, the fact that it’s a loan move with an option but not an obligation to buy suits us perfectly – if Araujo is a success, we can sign him outright; if not, he goes back to Barcelona without making a huge dent in our transfer kitty (even though LFC would be paying all of his £205,000-per-week wages).
No transaction in football is ever guaranteed to be a success, and there’s a lot more to like about bringing in the Uruguay defender than to dislike. This could yet go down as a hugely astute piece of business at Anfield.

It’s a cheap gamble from FSG because they don’t want to spend. It he doesn’t stay fit it causes more problems, his injuries record doesn’t fill me with confidence. Then there’s the mistakes and his poor distribution out of defence.
The better solution should have been konsa at centre back and Spence to cover the full backs. When van dijk leaves next season our defence is in more of a mess than it now. FSG are just digging themselves into deeper hole.
It’s a massive gamble on a player Barcelona wanted to get rid of. Who has a proven track record of missing games like Gomez.
