Liverpool are reportedly “not currently working” to bring Djed Spence to Anfield this summer.
Reliable transfer news expert Ben Jacobs reports on X (formerly Twitter) that the England international – who enjoyed an impressive World Cup in the States – is “open” to a switch away from North London.
However, the Merseysiders are understood to be looking at alternative targets to the 25-year-old fullback.

The same footballer, might we remind some, who missed a sizeable chunk of the season with multiple hamstring issues. And what of our alternative option, Conor Bradley? Oh, yes, of course… more injury issues.

Now, to read between the lines of Jacobs’ tweet on the subject, we had to assume that “other targets” refers either totally, or in large part, to our ongoing pursuit of PSG duo Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye.
Which may very well mean that Spence becomes an active option in the coming weeks when it becomes clearer just how much budget Liverpool have left to work with.
Can Liverpool sign anyone better for £35m?
In the current heavily inflated market, it’s difficult to argue that Spence, coming off an impressive World Cup campaign, is expensive at £35m. And listen, while we do agree that Liverpool shouldn’t conduct business on the basis of who performed well in the tournament, we can surely all agree that £35m is dirt cheap, right?
Able to cover both flanks (and primarily operating as a right-back) and offering explosive pace and an ability to take on his man, it’s the kind of option you’d imagine would appeal to Andoni Iraola.
The argument Liverpool’s recruitment team may feel inclined to make, of course, is that when both Bradley and Frimpong are fit, we have sufficient depth in place for the position.
But the fact of the matter is that we can’t rely on the Northern Irishman to complete a string of games without picking up an injury. More to the point, he’s not going to be back on the pitch much before November-December time, judging by Iraola’s recent injury update.
So we need a body in now. Ultimately, we can always worry about the problem of thinning down our options at right-back later, but we can’t go into another campaign expecting Dominik Szoboszlai to deputise, losing the Hungarian’s quality in midfield.
And for the sake of £35m, we highly doubt there’s a better option out there with Premier League experience who could instantly slot in as well as Djed Spence.
LFC are making a mockery of themselves for not signing Spence,if they regard 35 million as too much. Spence is a 2 in 1 ,kind of a player and his pace is second to none.At 35 million,he is a bargain. I am over any talk of Frimpong being an LFC player this season – he is simply not up to it or good enough to be in the EPL in any position – to not sign Spence is sheer utter stupidity- just like the pursuit of Barcola is crazy. LFC need 5 or 6 new players….to fund that they must sell Tsimikas, Frimpong, Chiesa, Elliott, Jones, McAllister and Cody Gapko. Now Spence at 35 mil is a bargain…they are being stupid to even contemplate not strengthening at the back (they are threadbare and talking about not yet proven youngsters like they are both world beaters, both coming off long term injuries) – I would also buy Zabarnyi. Now they need a top class number 6/someone who is an enforcer (leave that to Hughes to find) maybe Scott, up front we save money by getting either Woltermade in on loan or Nunez on a free as a stop gap until Ekitike is back, the wingers WE DO NOT BUY BARCOLA – but buy Mbaye and either Rayan or Fernandez Pardo…all this talk about not spending on defence FROM LFC IS LUDICROUS….plenty of money to do all this NOW if we sell what I have noted and do not become a rope a dope in paying ridiculous money for Barcola…go and do it Hughes/preferably in the next three weeks. YNWA.
Spence sounds good, especially at that price! And we need cover in that position.
Frankly I wanted Djed at Anfield based on his loan at Forest, before he went to Spurs! It reminded me of the first time I saw Robbo play for Hull. He’s a seriously good player, with serious pace too!
Richard Hughes won’t admit to his mistakes last summer, that’s why we won’t be signing any full backs. Frimpong has been a terrible signing, he’s far too small and lightweight, that’s why he keeps picking injuries, he been injured five times since he’s been at the club.
Kirkez isn’t much better, his positioning is poor and both Kirkez and frimpong are a Liability at defending set pieces.
70 million on two terrible full backs. In fact frimpong is a wing back, and that’s another reason why we shouldn’t have bought him. Just look how small he is .
Far too lightweight for the premier league
Man i’m glad i’m not the only LFC supporter who feels like this! I agree with all these comments. Ludicrous, ridiculous, absurd are just a few words to describe this window and as a matter of fact the same words to describe Hughes!! It’s a sad reality to know that we have a very good manager now. Iraola is one of the best when it comes to pressing attacks and box to box plays. I agree with Redmist that Hughes does not want to admit his mistakes. Yet the mistakes cannot f*ing disappear when we sign one player for 128M – the problems in the back will still be there! Bradley cannot start where he left off. He had a huge injury and will take him some time to play an aggressive 90min straight away. We all agree that Frimpong cannot play the position that he was signed for. Unfortunately. Gomez is a ticking time injury bomb. We all know it’s imminent that he will be out again for a few weeks. It’s just a matter of time. To me it’s breathtaking why we are not looking at the signing of Spence. Why wouldn’t you? I mean he was one of the best if not THE best for the England squad. Made huge ground, recovered well and kept possession. WTF do you need more? Wake up and pay the 35M for this man! Get Zabarnyi too! Drop the Barcola thing. I agree with Mbaye though! I’d choose him over Barcola. Not to say B is not a good player he’s an amazing player – we just can’t spend that kind of money when we know we have to get reinforced in three other areas! A 400M frontline cannot get you to the top when you’re walking the wire at the back. It’s scary to think about it. Can directors of FSG not override Hughes? Can they not see that he’s making a MASSIVE mistake! Has made them before! Not even talking about the Diaz sale!! Our biggest problem is full backs! There’s no two ways about it. If he does not sign defenders this window I don’t even see us staying in the top half. We will be the team who concedes the most, AGAIN!! Iraola is great, but he needs help. VVD and Dom needs help.
